Maybility | Sports Ability Month

Cork Sports Partnership are delighted to announce that SportsAbility month will return this May. Join us during Maybility to celebrate and champion disability inclusion in sport and physical activity. 

Education

If you are keen to build your knowledge and skillset around inclusive sport or strive to be a disability-inclusive club, join us for one of our training workshops. 

Participation 

Throughout May, we will be facilitating several come-and-try events along with highlighting disability-inclusive clubs, teams, and facilities across the county. 

Celebration

Our SportsAbility campaign will be a celebration of disability-inclusion in action. Follow along as we highlight disability-inclusive initiatives across Cork, and celebrate our participants taking part in the month’s programmes and events.

Join us for a disability inclusion workshop!

Sports Inclusion Disability Awareness Workshop

Workshop Description: 

Developed by Active Disability Ireland, this SIDA workshop is an introductory level 90-minute workshop designed to build awareness around people with disabilities participating in community sport and physical activity. 

Who is the Workshop For?  

Coaches, instructors, volunteers, parents and anyone working with people with disabilities in the health, sport or education sector to facilitate and promote physical activity.

Content Includes: 

  • Disability Models
  • Types of Disability 
  • Barriers to participation in sport and physical activity
  • TREE Inclusion Tool 
  • Adapting Activities
  • Inclusive Communication 
  • Introduction to Sport Inclusion Charter

On completion of the workshop, participants will receive an Active Disability Ireland Certificate of Participation.

Vision Sports Awareness Training

Delivered by Vision Sports Ireland, Vision Sports Awareness Training is designed to educate coaches, volunteers and teachers on vision impairment and how small adaptations to sport and physical activity sessions can make a huge difference to the experience of the participant with a vision impairment.

Attendees will learn about the various types of vision impairment, basic techniques of sighted guide training and the importance of description and colour contrast when delivering a session.

Examples will be presented of various Blind and Vision Impaired sports and the adapted equipment available.

Inclusive Schools Workshop

Delivered by the IWA, will explore the benefits of inclusive practices and practical ideas for including students with physical disabilities within their P.E. class.

This workshops is most suitable for teachers and SNA’s but sport/physical activity coaches and volunteers are most welcome to come along.

Come and Try Gymnastics

Flip and Fly Fitness invite children with disabilities or additional needs to come along and try out gymnastics this May!

  • Who: Children with mild to moderate disabilities or additional needs 
  • Ages: 6 – 12 years 
  • Venue: Goleen Community Centre 
  • Date: Tuesday, May 12th. 
  • Time: 5 – 5.45 pm

Come and Try Soccer

Rathcoole invite children with disabilities or additional needs to come along and try one of their inclusive soccer sessions. 

  • Who: Children with disabilities or additional needs
  • Ages: 5 – 12 years

  • The session will take place on an outdoor grass soccer field.

Angling Ireland invite children and teenagers with disabilities to come along and have a go at fishing this May.

Come and Try Wheelchair Rugby

Join IWA Sport and Cork’s Rebel Wheelers for the first junior wheelchair rugby blitz on Saturday, May 9th.

Children and teenagers interested in trying out the fast and exciting sport, are welcome to come along and have a go, chairs and equipment will be provided. The day will also provide an opportunity to meet current junior rugby players and coaches.

For new participants, an introduction to the sport, how to play, rules and the different types of chairs will be covered at the start of the day.

Come and Try Table Tennis

Beech Hill Table Tennis Club invite teenagers and adults with disabilities or additional needs to come along and try a table tennis session this May.

Date: Wednesday, May 20th

Come and Train Gym Induction Session

Leisureworld Bishopstown invite teenagers and adults with disabilities or additional needs to come along and try out a free gym induction session this May. 

Our small-group gym induction sessions are designed to help participants feel comfortable and confident in the gym environment. 

Become familiar with a gym layout, and how to safely and effectively use key gym equipment. 

If you or your child has been thinking about joining a gym but you feel nervous or unsure where to start, our free induction session might be the perfect first step.

Come and Swim Sensory Swim Sessions

Enjoy a free sensory swim session in Aura Leisure Centre in Youghal. 

Splash, Relax, and Enjoy! This session is designed to help participants relax and enjoy swimming in a calm environment with reduced noise and light.

  • 2-3pm
  • 3-4pm
  • 4-5pm

Ages: Children and teenagers aged 6 – 18. 

Please note: 

  • The sensory friendly session is unstructured time in the water without a teacher or coach.
  • Participants under 10 must be accompanied in the water by an adult.
  • For added comfort and confidence, less experienced swimmers are also welcome to attend with an adult. Each ticket includes 1 participant and 1 accompanying adult.

Learn to Cycle

Learn to Cycle is a beginner cycling programme for children (aged 6+) and teenagers with disabilities or additional needs. 

The programme runs over 5-6 weeks, and supports participants to gradually move from striding and gliding on their bike to confidently balancing, pedalling and braking.

Run 4 All

Programme Information

Run 4 All is a six-week buddy training programme designed specifically for adults with disabilities, along with an adult family member or friend.

The programme supports participants to train for the inclusive mile of Cork City Marathon. 

Participants train and take part in the marathon mile with an adult buddy, who can be a family member or friend.  

The programme comprises of six in-person walk-to-jog sessions with a coach.

Special School Athletics Blitz

Culminative school blitz day for special schools who participated in the Little Athletics special school programme.

The aim of the Little Athletics programme is to introduce students of special schools to athletics in a fun, supportive environment. The 4-week programme will provide students, SNAs & teachers with an introduction to athletic disciplines of running, jumping and throwing.
