Celebrating Africa Day in East Cork: A Weekend of Culture, Community and Football

East Cork is set to come alive this May as communities come together to celebrate Africa Day 2026 with a vibrant weekend programme in Carrigtwohill. Organised by local partners including Carrigtwohill Community Council, SARI (Sport Against Racism Ireland), and Carrigtwohill United AFC, the event promises a powerful mix of culture, sport, and community connection.

A Weekend of Celebration

The celebrations kick off on Friday, 22nd May at Carrigtwohill Community Centre, where an opening ceremony from 12:30pm to 2:00pm will feature a colourful flag parade and energetic performances from the Burundi Drummers. This opening sets the tone for a weekend that highlights the richness and diversity of African cultures across Cork.

Later that afternoon, attention turns to sport and community engagement, with one of the standout highlights of the event:


East Cork Africa Day Football Tournament

Football will take centre stage on Friday evening with the East Cork Africa Day Football Tournament, bringing together players, supporters, and families for an exciting display of skill, teamwork and unity.

Organised in partnership with Carrigtwohill United AFC, the tournament embodies the spirit of Africa Day—bringing people together through shared passion and respect. With teams representing a wide range of communities, the competition is expected to be both highly competitive and deeply inclusive.

Community Night – Saturday, 23rd May

The celebrations continue on Saturday, 23rd May, back at Carrigtwohill Community Centre, with a Community Night from 5:00pm onwards.

The evening includes:

  • Cultural performances, including a return of the flag parade and Burundi drummers
  • Food and refreshments
  • A thought-provoking seminar from 6:30pm to 8:30pm titled:
    “From Fear to Understanding: Conversations on Migration”
