It was a busy year both on and off the water this year with Meitheal Mara and the Badoireacht Programmes. Cork Sports Partnership were delighted once again to support these programmes and events through the Urban Outdoor Initiative fund. We look forward to working with Meitheal Mara again in 2023. Check out some of the highlights from this year!
Ocean to City Training Programme:
- Ocean to City training programme began in March with 77 young people participating in the training programme as well as 5 adults as part of the Big Brother Big Sister programme
- The programme culminated in a youth race course of 4km from Blackrock to the finish line at Lapps Quay
- 47 young people competed on race day. Bádóireacht participants represented 10 different youth organisations & clubs from all over the city & beyond
- 27 boats competed in this 4km race
Bádóireacht Summer Camp:
- The Bádóireacht Sumer Camp was held in August 2022
- Over the course of the camp young people had an opportunity to greatly improve their rowing skills
- In addition to rowing in the Dunfanaghy currachs they also graduated to rowing racing currachs
- They also had the chance to go on a longer row, travelling a greater distance than they had previously and experiencing new stretches of river in the city
- The Bádóireacht Summer Camp also challenged the young people to try rowing a currach solo for the first time
- This was hugely beneficial to the young people in terms of their skills development but also in terms of their own self-confidence, resilience and determination
Youth Leadership Programme:
- Over the Summer months Bádóireacht ran a Youth Leadership Programme on one day per week
- Some of the more experienced young people had expressed an interest in training to become assistant coaches on the water
- The training was designed with this in mind and also to provide certified inhouse and external training to young people that were of school-leaving age
