Build Your Confidence on the Hills: Happy Hiking Hill Skills Days Coming to Cork

If you’ve been thinking about getting more out of your time in the outdoors, two upcoming Happy Hiking Hill Skills Days in Cork are the perfect opportunity to build confidence, learn essential skills, and explore the hills safely.

Delivered by Mountaineering Ireland as part of their national Happy Hiking programme, these practical, hands-on sessions are designed for both beginners and those looking to refresh their skills in a supportive environment.

Two Dates to Choose From

Outdoor enthusiasts in Cork can take part in one of two upcoming sessions:

  • Friday, 22nd August – Cork
  • Friday, 26th September – Cork

Each day runs as a full-day experience, giving participants the opportunity to learn while out on real terrain alongside qualified and experienced instructors.

What You’ll Learn

The Hill Skills Days focus on giving participants the knowledge and confidence to enjoy Ireland’s hills safely and responsibly. Throughout the day, you’ll gain practical experience in:

  • Navigation basics – map reading, using a compass, and planning routes
  • Hill safety awareness – understanding weather, terrain, and potential hazards
  • What to bring – guidance on essential equipment and packing
  • Movement skills – how to walk efficiently over different types of terrain

These are core skills that form the foundation of safe hillwalking and are especially valuable for anyone looking to move beyond well-trodden paths.

Who Is It For?

The sessions are open to:

  • Adults (18+)
  • Complete beginners curious about hiking
  • Regular walkers looking to build confidence and independence
  • Anyone interested in learning how to explore the outdoors more safely

No prior experience is required—just a willingness to learn and enjoy the outdoors.

Learn by Doing

Unlike classroom-based courses, Hill Skills Days are delivered outdoors in real conditions, allowing participants to immediately put new skills into practice. This hands-on approach ensures learning is practical, relevant, and easy to apply on future hikes.

Participants will spend the day working in small groups with experienced instructors, gaining valuable insights into decision-making, navigation, and safety in the hills.

Why It Matters

Hillwalking is one of the most accessible and rewarding ways to stay active, but it also requires a basic understanding of navigation, preparation, and safety.

Programmes like Happy Hiking aim to make the hills more accessible by equipping people with the skills they need to enjoy them confidently. The initiative encourages safe, responsible outdoor recreation while helping more people discover the physical and mental health benefits of time spent outdoors.

Get Involved

Places for both dates are limited, and these sessions tend to fill up quickly. Whether you’re just starting out or looking to sharpen your skills, this is a fantastic opportunity to invest in your outdoor confidence.
