FitLine Opens New Call for Volunteer Mentors to Support Healthy Ageing Nationwide

Age & Opportunity’s Active Programme is delighted to announce a renewed call for FitLine Volunteer Mentors for 2026, inviting warm, friendly and community‑minded individuals to help support older adults in becoming more physically active.

FitLine is a free, confidential and volunteer‑led telephone motivation line designed especially for people aged 50+ who would like to start getting active—or become a little more active—but may need encouragement, ideas or confidence to begin. Participants are matched with trained volunteer mentors who call them regularly, offering support, motivation and practical advice tailored to their life and preferences.

For many, FitLine has been a lifeline.
Participants frequently say the calls give them “a great lift,” provide “gentle encouragement,” and offer much‑needed social connection—especially for those living alone. As Anne from Cork shares, “FitLine gave me the push I needed to stop making excuses to get up and get active.”

What FitLine Mentors Do

FitLine Volunteer Mentors play a key role in supporting older people to build healthy, active routines. Mentors:

  • Make regular phone calls (approximately 2–3 hours every fortnight) to registered participants.
  • Provide motivation, information and encouragement, acting as the friendly voice of the FitLine service.
  • Chat with participants about their lives and goals, helping them find activities that suit their needs and confidence level.
  • Share local information, such as groups, clubs or facilities in their community.
  • Record brief updates online after each call (full training provided).
  • Attend induction and quarterly volunteer sessions online, becoming part of a supportive national mentor team.

Who Can Volunteer?

Age & opportunity is seeking volunteers who:

  • Have an interest in physical activity and healthy ageing.
  • Can commit 2–3 hours per fortnight from home.
  • Are comfortable using a computer/laptop and internet.
  • Communicate with warmth, empathy and positivity.
  • Can attend online induction training (2 × 3‑hour Zoom sessions).
  • Will complete Garda vetting.
  • Hold a positive, empowering attitude toward older people.

Why FitLine Matters

Some people find it easy to stay active—others need a little extra help. Many older adults hesitate because they aren’t sure where to start, worry about confidence, or simply lose motivation. FitLine offers:

  • A free, friendly service designed to help people build sustainable habits.
  • A simple structure: after the first call, mentors ring participants every two weeks until they feel confident progressing on their own.
  • A strong sense of connection and encouragement, proven to help people move more and feel better..
