Supporting Disability in Sport, Physical Activity and PE

Our Disability Support Series is back this October. Join us for a coaching workshop or webinar! 

For our 2025 Autumn series, we are delighted to collaborate with Boccia Ireland, Badminton Ireland, and Volleyball Ireland for a series of disability-inclusive coaching workshops. These coaching workshops are suitable for staff of disability services and special schools, as well as special education staff who wish to introduce new sports to their school or service. Workshops will cover the skills and rules of badminton, boccia, and seated volleyball, as well as suitable games and activities to use in sessions. Staff will receive equipment packs to use in their service or school after the workshop.

In collaboration with Vision Sports Ireland and Cycling Ireland our education series will also include a Tandem Pilot training course. This course is suitable for cyclists and cycling enthusiasts who would like to learn how to pilot and support people who are blind, or vision impaired on tandem bikes. 

In addition to sport-specific workshops, in collaboration with Active Disability Ireland, we are delighted to offer two online workshops in Sport Inclusion and Inclusive Fitness. These online webinars are suitable for coaches, disability service staff, club volunteers, teachers, SNAs, PTs, fitness instructors, or any individual striving to support people with disabilities in sport, physical activity, or exercise. 

If you would like to build your knowledge and skillset around inclusive sport and physical activity, these workshops are for you!

Boccia Leaders Award

We are delighted to collaborate with Boccia Ireland for the delivery of a Boccia Leaders Award course. 

This coaching course will provide a comprehensive overview of how to play the game of boccia, the rules of the game and ideas on how to develop and deliver fun and inclusive boccia sessions for players of all abilities. 

Participants will be required to complete and demonstrate evidence of follow on activities after the workshop to receive accreditation. 

The workshop welcomes those working in disability services, special schools and special education settings.

Tandem Pilot Training Course

Would you like to become a tandem bike pilot to support people who are blind or vision impaired? This is the workshop for you! 

In collaboration with Vision Sports Ireland and Cycling Ireland, we are delighted to bring a tandem pilot training course to Cork this Autumn. 

This training course provides cyclists with the skills and confidence to pilot an individual who is blind or vision impaired on a tandem bike. 

Course Information 

The training consists of two sessions: 

  • A 2-hour online workshop, completed before in-person training. 
  • A 3-hour in-person, practical workshop. 

To complete the course, attendance at both workshops is required.

  • Date: Saturday, October 4th
  • Time: 2 – 5pm

Badminton Coaching Workshop: Disability Services and Special Schools

We are delighted to team up with Badminton Ireland for a coaching programme for staff of disability services and special schools as well as special education staff. 

The coaching workshop will provide an overview of the skills and rules of badminton and examples of fun games and activities that can be used when delivering sessions for service users or pupils. 

Staff will receive equipment packs to bring back to their school or service.

Time: 10am – 3pm 

Location: Garryduff Sports Centre 

Cost: €20 per service / school – two staff places and 1 kitbag.

Sport Inclusion and Disability Awareness Workshop

Created by Active Disability Ireland, this workshop is designed to build awareness around people with disabilities participating in community sport and physical activity. 
 
Content Includes

  • Challenges to participation in sport and physical activity
  • Models of Inclusion
  • Introduction to SportInclusion Disability Charter

On completion of the workshop, participants will receive an Active Disability Ireland Certificate of Participation. 

This workshop is suitable for anyone looking to develop their awareness around disability inclusion in sport, physical activity or PE.

Inclusive Fitness Training

Delivered by Active Disability Ireland, this workshop has been designed for individuals working in the fitness and exercise sector who would like to create inclusive environments and programmes for people with disabilities. 

The workshop is suitable for personal trainers, gym and leisure centre staff, fitness centre managers and reception or administration staff.

If you are working in the fitness and exercise space and are looking to build your knowledge and skill set in the area of disability inclusion, this workshop is for you.

Sitting Volleyball Coaching Workshop: Disability Service and Special School Staff

We are delighted to collaborate with Volleyball Ireland for a seated volleyball coaching workshop.

Sitting Volleyball is a Paralympic sport, where participants with physical disabilities play seated on the floor. However, the game can be adapted to suit a variety of needs where players can play seated in chairs or wheelchairs. 

This workshop will cover an introduction to volleyball skills and how to coach them as well as a comprehensive overview of the game of seated volleyball. The workshop will be active and hands on, providing participants with the opportunity to try and play all aspects of the game. 

Participants will receive an equipment pack to bring back to their school or service to have a go at playing seated volleyball with their service users or pupils.
