June 10th to 16th

International Men’s Health Week begins on the Monday before Father’s Day and ends on Father’s Day itself. During 2024, it will run from Monday 10th until Sunday 16th June.

As part of the initiative Cork Sports Partnership have teamed up with a number of local clubs and organisations to promote the benefits of physical activity in men’s health.

The overall aims of Men’s Health Week are to:

  • Heighten awareness of preventable health problems for males of all ages
  • Support men and boys to engage in healthier lifestyle choices / activities
  • Encourage the early detection and treatment of health difficulties in males

Men's BoxFIT | Monday 10th | Clonakilty

Venue: Clonakilty Boxing Club

Date: Monday June 10th

Time: 8pm to 9pm

Information: Cork Sports Partnership is delighted to team up with Clonakilty Boxing club to introduce men to the IABA’s Start Box Programme. Boxing is a great sport for men to improve their physical health and welbeing.

Petanque | Monday 10th | Churchfield

Venue: Leisureworld, Churchfield

Information:

Free petanque demonstration session in Leisureworld Churchfield all abilities welcome! Equipment is provided

Information:

This social taster is open to those new to the sport and those who have played before but want to get back to playing! This taster will introduce men to the basics of tennis in a fun and supportive setting. Now is the time to try something new!! All equipment is provided!

Suitable for: Men 18+

Nutrition Webinar | Tuesday 11th | Online

Aoife McDonald, Registered Dietitian, to join Cork County Libraries for a free nutrition webinar on Tuesday 11th June at 7pm to discuss Men’s Health Nutrition.
 
Aoife’s webinar will cover these topics, and many more
• Creating balanced and nutritious meal plans
• Strategies for healthy weight loss and maintenance
• Foods that support heart health
• Nutrients that support brain health
There will also be time for questions after the webinar.

Swim & Sauna | Wednesday 12th | Mallow

Venue: Ballyhass Mallow 

Date: Wednesday June 12th

Time: 7:00pm to 8:00pm

Information: Experience the multiple benefits of a swim in a freshwater lake followed by a relaxing session in a firewood heated sauna. Safe, social and healthy for all involved. Please bring swimsuit (no wetsuit), towel and sandals/crocs. Arrive 15mins before your start time to check-in.

Axe Throwing | Thursday 13th | Mallow

Venue: Ballyhass Mallow

Date: Thursday June 13th

Time: 6pm to 8pm

Information:

Exactly what it says on the tin! Custom designed axe throwing arena!! Once you hear that first “thunk” when the Axe gets buried in the timber you’re hooked! Every participant will get the chance to throw an axe at a target to gain points. The highest score wins after a tournament format. Everyone will go head to head with 10 throws apiece. When you get to your final throw you get a chance to go for the kill shot! Is it worth the gamble though?

Walking Football | Friday 14th | Glengariffe

The opportunity to return to the game you love at your own pace, while newcomers to football can easily get involved! Walking football is a very easy & enjoyable way for older adults to stay active, have fun & enjoy the game!

Stand Up Paddleboarding | Friday 14th | Mallow

Venue: Ballyhass Mallow 

Date: Friday June 14th

Time: 7:00pm to 9:00pm

Information: Stand-up Paddle Boarding is one of the fastest-growing outdoor water activities in the world. SUPing is one of the most versatile water activities possible. SUPs can be used on lakes, rivers, and at the seaside. So whether you want to go for a relaxing amble on a lake, try your hand at SUP surfing, or progress to SUP Yoga, then you will need to learn the basics. In Ballyhass Mallow you will receive expert introductory coaching on how to balance on and manoeuvre a SUP on the crystal clear water. The taster session includes a dry land lesson, all gear included (wetsuit, buoyancy aid, SUP & paddle), expert advice on purchasing a SUP set-up and 60-90 mins on water time. Please arrive approx 15mins before start time to check-in.

Wakeboarding | Saturday 15th | Mallow

Venue: Ballyhass Mallow

Date: Saturday June 15th

Time: 6pm to 9pm

Information: Experience one of the ultimate water sports possible. In Ireland’s largest system 2.0 wakepark in Ballyhass Activity Centre Mallow you can take your first leap into an awesome new sport. With one-to-one coaching you will never get a better opportunity to learn. Each participant will get 30mins on the water time, with constant feedback and coaching. All gear is included (wetsuit, board, bindings, helmet and vest)

Activator Poles | Sunday 16th | Bantry

Venue: Bantry

Date: Sunday June 16th

Time: 10:30am to 11:30am

Information: Activator poles are an adaptation of Nordic Walking poles and have been developed by Canadian therapists to promote balance and improve mobility. All equipment is provided. This fitWalk Ireland Programme focuses on promoting long-term fitness and independence through increasing balance and functionality with the use of Activator Poles.

Kayaking | Sunday 16th | Coachford

Venue: Ballyhass Coachford

Date: Sunday August 16th

Time: 6pm to 9pm  

Information: Get up close and personal with the local wildlife and nature on our Lee Valley Kayak Expedition, while fully supervised by kayak guides. This stretch of water is a fascinating blend of history and wildlife. It is roughly a 2.5 km stretch of river.

The tours are run in double sit on top sea kayaks and single kayaks that are super stable and easy to paddle. This makes the tour very accessible for all levels of abilities. You will be provided with wetsuits to keep you warm. You can use one of our dry bags if you would like to bring your valuables.

Trail Walking | Sunday 16th | Durrus

Venue: Durrus West Cork: Route TBC

Date & Time: Sunday June 16th,

Start Time: 12:00pm

Information: Please bring a small rucksack with the usual raingear, lunch and a drink and any personal medications i.e. inhaler, etc. Hiking boots are recommended.

Suitable for: Men 18+, beginners and those new to hiking. 

Archery | Tuesday 18th | Coachford

Venue: Ballyhass Coachford

Date: Tuesday June 18th

Time: 7pm to 9pm

Information:

Try your hand at this ancient sport and hone your coordination, balance and self-control. Ballyhass’ archery instructors will help develop your skills and add some games and competitions too! They have bows of all sizes to suit all abilities and age groups.

Staying Fit For The Future Better Balance

Venue: Mallow Library

Date & Time: Thursday June 13th | 12:30pm to 1:30pm

Venue: Charleville Library

Date & Time: Wednesday June 12th | 12:30pm to 1:30pm

Information:

This programme is suitable for adults who walk unaided and want to stay strong on their feet and falls free for life. It is not suitable for people who have fallen in the past 12 months or who use a walking stick or frame.

If you are wondering if the programme is suitable please attempt the following simple test of balance and strength:

  • Cross your arms across your chest, then keeping your arms crossed stand on 1 leg, now close your eyes and stand tall and steady for 10 seconds…

If you find yourself a good bit more wobbly than you expected, this programme is for you! Programmes are delivered by exercise professionals who have been trained by HSE Physiotherapists in the Staying Fit For the Future, Better Balance Better Bones Programme.
