Active Community Awards 2025 – A Day of Celebration and Inspiration at Cork County Hall

Cork, December 3rd, 2025 – The spirit of community and inclusion was alive and well at Vertigo, Cork County Hall, as the Cork Sports Partnership hosted the Active Community Awards 2025 Winner Presentations. The event brought together local leaders, volunteers, and partners to celebrate the incredible stories behind this year’s winners.

The afternoon began with a warm welcome as guests gathered to enjoy tea, coffee, and conversation overlooking the city.

Cllr. Mary Linehan Foley, Mayor of Cork County, officially opened proceedings, setting the tone for a day filled with pride and positivity.
“These awards highlight the incredible work happening in communities across Cork. Each winner has made a lasting impact, and their dedication deserves our deepest admiration,” said Mayor Linehan Foley.

Following her remarks, Cllr. Fergal Dennehy, Lord Mayor of Cork City, spoke about the power of sport to unite people:
“Sport and physical activity bring people together, and today we celebrate those who make that possible. Congratulations to all our winners for inspiring us all.”

As the event unfolded, attendees were treated to the premiere of each winner’s award video, bringing their stories to life on screen. Smiles and applause filled the room as guests learned how these individuals and groups have transformed their communities through sport and physical activity.

Michael Carey, Chairperson of Cork Sports Partnership, reflected on the exceptional standard of nominations:
“The standard of nominations this year was exceptional. These winners represent the very best of community spirit and commitment to active living.”

The five award categories showcased a diverse range of achievements:

School Award: The Convent Primary School, Mallow – For embedding physical activity and wellbeing into school culture and ensuring inclusivity for all pupils.

Inclusion Award: Sanctuary Runners – For fostering integration and solidarity through running and walking, connecting asylum seekers, refugees, and Irish residents.

Champion Award: Sean Sheehan, Dunmanway Boxing Club – For his tireless voluntary work as coach and mentor, creating a safe, inclusive space for young people.

Group/Club Award: Clonakilty Women’s Shed – For empowering nearly 200 women through physical activity, education, and social connection.

Special Recognition Award: John Connolly – For founding Inniscarra Seniors on the Move and dedicating decades of expertise to improving physical activity opportunities for older adults.

The atmosphere was one of celebration and gratitude, as winners accepted their certificates and trophies surrounded by family, friends, and supporters.

Closing the event, Kristine Meenaghan, CEO of Cork Sports Partnership, expressed heartfelt thanks:
“Thank you to every volunteer, teacher, coach, and organiser who makes Cork a more active and inclusive place. Today’s winners are shining examples of what can be achieved through passion and collaboration.”

The 2025 Active Community Awards not only honoured remarkable achievements but also reminded everyone present of the power of community-driven action to create healthier, happier lives.
