Staying Fit for the Future

As part of Cork Sports Partnership’s WellComm Active Initiative, we are delighted to bring you Staying Fit for the Future with Better Balance Better Bones.

Cork Sports Partnership has partnered with the HSE Health Promotion & Improvement Division and Physiotherapy Department to roll out this exciting programme in Cork.

About

Delivered over 10 weekly sessions in a community setting, the Staying Fit for the Future with Better Balance Better Bones programme is an enjoyable on your feet exercise class.

As one ages, reaction times, bone health, strength, balance, and flexibility of tissue may become impaired. The aim of this programme is to help prevent this deterioration in adults by challenging and training the main components needed for maintaining good independent movement.

Classes focus on strength, flexibility, range of movement, and balance to ensure environmental factors such as steps, paths, darkness, hills, etc will not become an obstacle to enjoying an active and healthy life.

Who is the programme aimed at

This programme is suitable for adults who walk unaided and want to stay strong on their feet and falls free for life. It is not suitable for people who have fallen in the past 12 months or who use a walking stick or frame.

If you are wondering if the programme is suitable please attempt the following simple test of balance and strength:

  • Cross your arms across your chest, then keeping your arms crossed stand on 1 leg, now close your eyes and stand tall and steady for 10 seconds…

If you find yourself a good bit more wobbly than you expected, this programme is for you! Programmes are delivered by exercise professionals who have been trained by HSE Physiotherapists in the Staying Fit For the Future, Better Balance Better Bones Programme. 

How much does the programme cost?

The cost of the programme is €63.60 (including booking fee) for 10 weeks, payable online or at the first session. Participants receive a take home exercise booklet which is included in this cost.
