West Cork Sports Inclusion Showcase

OPPORTUNITIES FOR ALL DURING  “INCLUSIVE COMMUNITIES” THEMED WEST CORK SPORTS INCLUSION SHOWCASE EVENT

On Friday 12th May, the inaugural West Cork Sports Inclusion Showcase will take place in Dunmanway West Cork from 11-3pm. The sports inclusion showcase aims to promotes sport and physical activity for people with a disability. The event is open to people with disabilities, disability services, families, teachers, sports coaches or anyone interested in sport or physical activity for people of all abilities. There will be a variety of activities for people to come and try on the day along with an opportunity to meet clubs and organisations.

This year’s event will be run in collaboration with West Cork Development Partnership and will use Mary Immaculate Community College, Dunmanway as event Headquarters to facilitate participants and activity, as well as utilising the local amenities such as the Dunmanway Leisure Centre, the local astroturf pitches, the pitch and putt course and tennis courts. Taster sessions on the day include Swimming, Circuits, GAA for All, Gymnastics, Yoga, Rugby, Boxing as well as Fun games and skills. Information stands from a range of inclusive clubs and organisations will also be present on the day sharing information on what they have to offer in the community.  

Cork Sports Partnership and West Cork Development Partnership recently launched this event at the Mary Immaculate Community College, with representatives from the school, West Cork Jesters Rugby and Boxing club, local councillors and partner organisations.

Speaking at the launch, Cliona Horan, Sports Inclusion Disability Officer with Cork Sports Partnership stated ‘We are excited to host our first sports inclusion showcase in Dunmanway. We think it’s important to highlight what initiatives are available locally and we are grateful to Fergal Conlon and Mark Gaffney in the West Cork Development Partnership, for their support with this event. Their links with the local networks has been invaluable. Our stakeholders have also generously contributed their time and efforts in the planning of this event, thank you to the Mary Immaculate Community College, Cork County Council, and all the local organisations and clubs that have supported us in any way’.

Cliona added ‘We invite people of all abilities, especially groups from disability day services and schools to come along to the sports inclusion showcase 2023 and try out activities and sport in a fun and safe environment. ‘Supporting people of all abilities in the local community” ‘is the theme of the event and we are delighted to have so many activities on offer ensuring there is something there for everyone!’
