Bike Week Cork At Your Local County Library!

Check out the jam packed lined up of Cork County Council Library & Arts Service Bike Week Events Starting this week!

Throughout Bike Week

  • Children’s Colouring Competition
  • Children across Cork County are invited to design their own cycling t-shirt to celebrate Cork Bike Week. There are two age categories ages 5-8 and ages 9-12. Winners will have their design printed on their very own t-shirt and there will be some spot prizes for runners up!
  • Entries are due back by Friday 26th May. Contact your local Cork County Library branch for information or drop in to collect an entry form.

Friday 12th May at 11:00am in Midleton Library

  • Author, John Devoy, will talk about his travel memoir: Quondam: Travels in a Once World. In 1985, in a world before mobile phones, John travelled 33,000kms by bike from Cork, through eastern Europe, across the Sahara and onwards to the southernmost tip of Africa.
  • A must for anyone interested in adventure and a really good story!

Saturday 13th May at 11:30am in Clonakilty Library

  • As part of Cork Bike Week 2023 Clonakilty Library is running a build a bike craft session. The challenge is to make a bike out of recycled materials and the creations will be on display in the branch during Bike Week.
  • All materials will be supplied so the only think you need to bring along is your imagination. Suitable for ages 8-12 and booking is essential as places are limited.

  • ‘Cycling for Everyone’
  • This event is all about caring for a bike and simple maintenance. Participants use different pumps and are taught how to do a puncture repair and how to avoid them. Plus how to thoroughly check over a bike – called the M Check.
  • Active travel and the health and environmental benefits of cycling will also be discussed.

  • Ben Murphy from Sliabh Luachra Cycling Club will be in Millstreet library to discuss basic bike skills – including bike maintenance, road safety and what to wear when cycling.

  • Cycle Safety Webinar
  • Schools across Cork County have been invited to join a Cycle Safety Webinar on Tuesday the 16th of May at 9:30am.
  • Led by Caroline Casey, Water & Road Safety Development Officer, the webinar will cover checks before setting off, on road safety and left hand turns.

  • Organised by Skerkin Island Library there will be an interactive online event in the Community Hall on Friday May 19th at 2pm with a talk and short-film by Peter Ruse.
  • There will also be a Q&A with Peter where he will recount his journey from Killarney to Sherkin Island by bike

Saturday 20th May at 11:30am in Youghal Library

  • ‘Bike Workshop’ with Brian and James Fitzgerald (TriHub, Youghal)
  • Come along to Youghal Library for an informative practical talk on cycling. Topics covered will include bike maintenance, cycle routes, electric bikes, road safety, protective clothing, transporting your bike, Youghal Cycling Club and any other questions you have to get ready for cycling the new Greenway.
